From ancient ritual bronzes and the grandeur of the Terracotta Army to the elegance of
Song Dynasty landscape painting and the refined brushwork of calligraphy, Chinese art
reveals a rich interplay of history, philosophy, and cultural expression. The lecture will
guide listeners through the centuries, highlighting how artistic practices reflected
changes in politics, religion, and daily life, while also showing the enduring themes that
connect China’s artistic achievements across millennia.
“Chinese art offers us a profound window into the evolution of one of the world’s most
enduring civilizations,” said Gary Martin, M.A., lecturer for the series. “By looking at
these works, we not only see remarkable beauty but also encounter the ideas, values,
and philosophies that have shaped Chinese culture for thousands of years.”
