Art Talks: El Greco

Born Doménikos Theotokópoulos in Crete, El Greco’s career spanned Greece, Italy, and ultimately Spain, where he developed a singular style defined by elongated figures, dramatic use of light, and an intense spiritual expressiveness. The presentation will trace his artistic evolution from Byzantine icon painting to the powerful, emotionally charged works created in Toledo, including masterpieces such as The Burial of the Count of Orgaz (1586–1588) and View of Toledo (c. 1596–1600).

Gary Martin, M.A., an art historian and educator, brings decades of teaching and curatorial experience to this lecture, offering insight into El Greco’s enduring influence and his role as a precursor to modern expressionism. This free public event is part of an ongoing series designed to bring high-level art historical discourse to the Willits community and surrounding region.
Join us for an illuminating evening examining the life and legacy of a painter whose work continues to challenge and inspire.
